The sexual thought for today came to me, not like some psychic flash, but as a recent shopping expedition with a friend of mine. She was eyeing a few things she should not have been eyeing, and I shouldn’t use the word should because it’s nonsensical. We use the word should out of a sense of habit more than anything else. Anyway, we were shopping, came across a few exclusive labels, as you do in the finer or more ‘exclusive’ department stores, and it got me thinking.

Sex is viewed in different ways. Everyone has their own interpretation or definition of what it is or what it is about, but what about personal mottos. Can certain popular mottos be consistently applied to sex?

For myself, I believe and (try to) follow the idea/motto of sex being similar to luxury. Luxury – like the type that manifest in some of the products my friend eyed in the department store – is about quality, not quantity. You pay less for a polyester blend sweater and (so much) more for a cashmere version. Thus sex – for me at least -is about quality than quantity. I only say that because I had a short relationship with a sexual klutz for the first five or eight months of my adult sexual life.

Of course, the only other oddity that I need to resolve is the fact that sex is easier to obtain (for 90% of the female population) than a Birkin.

As if my personal life (I’m currently formulating a task related to my post grade thesis), this website feed has been giving me a bit of a headache that, masturbation, cannot relieve. Yes, my little injection or attempt at humor.

I have just re-synched it. Hopefully it will work, or I’ll be bombarding my internet host yet again. As if the ‘fun’ statistics computer program on campus isn’t enough of a headache.

Defining Sex

I suspect that few read research papers. Why read some in full when abstracts serve to summarize the findings of the research, especially when that research involves sex, technically the definition of sex such as (yet another) a study conducted by the Kinsey Institute.

How do you definite it? Do you really believe the results when the results were obtained via a marketing style telephone survey? I remember my undergrad years, participating in psych research for extra credit. Most of the time I’d second guess the research and go through the the motions and I also think that a lot of research with psych undergrad participants is largely unreliable; we just wanted to be in and out, faster than a porno movie.

Gawker has summarized the findings rather well. I can’t be bothered reading sex studies that ‘define’ sex myself. I don’t have the patience for the multitude of definitions:

According to the study, 95 percent of people agree that when a penis goes into a vagina then “sex”—that thing that we have spent so much much, waged so many wars, and sweated so many hours in the gym to attain—has occurred. However, 11 percent of people say that if there was no ejaculation, then there was no “sex.” Also 30 percent of people think oral sex is not “sex” and 20 percent believe that anal sex is not “sex” even though they both have “sex” in the title. That’s like saying there’s no “doom” in The Temple of Doom. It also means that about the quarter of the population think that all gay men and lesbians are virgins.

I’d agree with the penis in vagina definition, but it’s heterocentric. Sex is different to homosexual couples. Then again, look at the Bill Clinton definition of a sex act. It was orchestrated to enable him to squirm out of his sleaziness. Thus, the definition also depends on the situation. Most people don’t spend their days defining sex in operational or everyday terms. Sex is something that is implicit that involves all five senses, and then the ’sixth’ sense that scientists don’t even want to know about.

For me, sex is physical and emotional intimacy. It involves being stripped bare on many levels, other than the physical, and stepping into the unknown. It’s also about propagating the species, even when it doesn’t have to. A primal, physical and emotional bump and grind that, depending on the mood and personality of individuals, can function on any level, from basic to esoteric/tantric.

From the bizarro world of Hollywood celebrity, comes this story of sex, mayhem and promiscuity from no one other than Mr 9 1/2 Weeks himself, Mickey Rourke.

The Sun has a piece on Rourke’s lush sex life, and I can only believe it if it includes Viagra.

“I once spent a weekend in the UK and had 14 women in one night. If you WAGs knew what Hollywood’s stars get up to you’d think you were married to pussycats.” [source]

Now I’m not one to believe Rourke’s claim or any man’s astronomical sexual claims only because I’m biologically aware of the sexual limitations. After all, that is what life as a post graduate research student is about: data and refuting wild claims when biological abilities are finite. Anyhow, celebrities do tend to overstate, exaggerate and, in Rourke’s case, blow on their own horn (no pun intended) a little too much.

Rourke’s up-talking reminds me of many a past boyfriend tattling about work achievements, financial goals and what have you. It also the kind of thing one finds on adult dating sites where there are so many Lotharios and so so little time -until you experience a few who fall short of their staggering sexual stories.

I can appreciate what Rourke is trying to do here but I really think it’s unnecessary. As an actor, he is quite capable and watchable, often compelling but this Hollywood culture of popularity, hypersexuality and celebrity is based on bullshit and, as an actor, he is beyond that, but still falls into the trap. Maybe it’s all about a mid-life crisis.

I feel that if he was any ordinary man, a non-Hollywood celebrity and celebrated actor, women would run a mile if they’d heard such a story about him bedding 14 women in one night. Stories like that are desperate from the mouths of ordinary men and they’re just as ordinary from the mouths of actors.

Bollywood Porn

Bollywood films intrigue me in the way that all cheesy films do. I mean, kisses aren’t really allowed and neither are sex scenes but imagine what life would be like if there was such a thing as Bollywood porn.

I’m betting many have considered the possibility or the what if factor. It’s difficult for me to watch a Bollywood film and take it seriously. But my reasoning behind this notion of Bollywood porn relates to the storylines of the said films. Most are contrived in the same way that porn films are. Things happen at the most coincidental moments. The drama, tears, deaths, and more drama,which is why I think Bollywood films would probably work as adult films. They’re similar to romance stories. By romance, I mean traditional romance, not the modern lit variety that revolves around dominant asshole male characters and demure (and ridiculously removed from reality) ’slim hipped and high breasted’ heroines.

Romance is ridiculous enough, but it usually features a quest of sorts -in the same way that Bollywood films do – but the color and overhyped or over-the-top acting in Bollywood films would be ideal for porno.

Imagine it, after a hot and sweaty sex scene/orgy, the cast can break out into song and dance. It’s an interesting alternative to the usual porn that is seen, by the bucket load: quite standard, boring and…well…tedious.

They say that there are many adult films for women, but are there really? All porn propaganda aside, most porn is made with men’s tastes in mind, not that I’m against that in the way a radical feminist would be but I do find it ho-hum. Most sexual research on men’s visual response actually points toward a high visual factor to arousal, which is all right, but it’s not like that for women and I wish that many sex writers would stop trying to tell me, and other women, that there is a standard method to arousal and that women should be aroused by all porn. It’s not that I’m not aroused by it, it’s just that I don’t like a lot of it, just like I don’t like a lot of romantic or erotic literature that features female characters that I can’t or will never identify with.

I read a Lady GaGa quote (from an upcoming issue of Cosmopolitan) and was about to shake my head with a little disappointment:

I decided to read further and had to take my hat off to her, because few say it so succinctly to women. This is the best career advice, and it should come early. Well, it’s actually not career advice, it’s the significant distinction between career and relationships:
