When it comes to pornography, female consumption has been steady. Over the years pornography has experiencing an increase in the presence of females behind the cameras. But there is always room for further progress. Twenty years ago, or even ten years ago, there was no such thing as a feminist porn film award. But PorYes has changed this. Speaking for PorYes, Laura Méritt:
We see pornography or the sexual imagination as an important life source. We see it as an inspiration, to be regarded as an integral part of life. Quality of life means satisfaction and sexual desire closely relates to satisfaction. That is why we are convinced that sex phantasies and sexual images should be made visible, also pornographical ones. Until recently women’s lust has not been given due space. We want more of it!
Méritt plans to transform x rated films by placing a PorYes label that fulfills certain criteria. To read the PorYes criteria, head here. The criteria include “a sex-positive attitude, no de-humanising or misogynistic portrayals” and “emotions and declarations of love are encouraged, doable, and showable.” The latter criterion is interesting. Most pornographic films are devoid of emotion or fail to portray emotion; actors are great at acting out sex (although they claim to be authentic) but lose out on emotion.
While the idea is attractive, one visit to the official website doesn’t provide concrete confirmation of the October award but there is a candidate page that include Candida Royalle and Annie Sprinkle.
