The Whore’s Canal

The National Gallery in London is hosting a recreation of Amsterdam’s red light district by American artists Ed and Nancy Kienholz. Their installation, titled ‘The Hoerengracht’ (The Whore’s Canal) recreates environment of the red light district  and infuses it with Dutch painting ambience. The Kienholz’s began making the installation in 1983 and completed it in five years.
According to National Gallery curator Nicholas Penny, the exhibition “Is an extremely serious exhibition and it does not in any way glamorize or romanticize prostitution.”
