Porn stars make sex scenes seem easy, but even porn stars experience stuff ups but while adult actors feel more comfortable with the sexual activity on set, mainstream actors do experience difficulty filming sex scenes.
Blake Lively, of Gossip Girl fame, describes her experience of the love scenes in her Ben Affleck directed film The Town as:
“You think, ‘Oh, that’s going to be so awkward’. But this scene isn’t supposed to be a steamy one — it’s sort of tragic… I’m pretty much crying in it.”
Lively’s perspective of a standard film sex scene is a far cry from the usual celebrity explanation that almost always refer to the technical aspects. Cate Blanchett’s view of her Notes on a Scandal scenes confirm the usual awkwardness that may result. The fear factor is a constant theme.
Of his love scenes with Jessica Alba, Hayden Christensen said:
“I was just so nervous. Really nervous! Running around with a lightsaber is really pretend, but when you are put in a situation where the scene you are doing becomes so real, it is terrifying!”
Love scenes are so warts and all. Mainstream actors are usually concerned with how the public perceives them. Imagine when a sex scene is involved? They’re down to little or nothing at all and their co-star, as well as the film crew, sees them for what they truly are.
Of his scenes in Black Snake Moan, Justin Timberlake discussed the technicalities:
“When you’re doing them you’re constantly thinking it isn’t going to look hot at all. I’ll crack a joke or something so it is not as uncomfortable. The sex scene was pretty hot. I’m not going to say it doesn’t feel weird pretending to fuck someone in front of a man with a sound boom, though.”
There it is, the exhibitionism. For those who feel 100% comfortable letting it all hang out, then it’s no problem but for those who associate sexual intimacy with privacy, simulating sex with a film crew is a nightmare so it makes me wonder about Kim Basinger and how comfortable she was starring in the 80s classic, 9 and a 1/2 Weeks.
